Hope in the City

I have only attended Los Angeles Fashion Week events and shows for the past few seasons. I have yet to attend NYFW or any of the Europe shows, but I regardless of that, Hope in the City is by far THE BEST event during LAFW.

Hope in the City was hosted at the gorgeous Skirball Center during LAFW week by Mosaic. Hope in the City aims to highlight local designers and charitable causes. While the majority of the ticket proceeds go to the Downtown Women’s Center, which aims to keep women and children out of homelessness. The event also highlights other amazing causes in their market place.

Within the market place a few organizations stood out to me.

The International Princess Project – aims to rehabilitate women in India enslaved in the sex trade, by creating job opportunities through local sewing centers. There the women create “Punjammies”, pajamas created with beautiful traditional Indian fabrics.

Beyond US – Handmade products to help enterprise women. With the Women Empowerment Employment Project, Beyond US aids to provide job training and skills to women living in impoverished communities in Africa.

The Runway!

The runway show was cleverly hosted by the awkwardly adorable fashion photographer Hank Fortener and The Style Networks’ “How Do I Look” host, Jeannie Mai.

Indie style band Lemon Sun kicked off the evening with their funk fused styling, complete with tap dance percussion.

The runway shows opened with the emerging designer’s inspiration segment. Below are my favorite pieces from the inspiration segment.

The two full runway shows featured Popavina and Dual Society. Popavina is designed by Marina Rahlin and incorporates her love for bright colors and pop art.

Dual Society is a menswear line designed by Rey Aquino.

There was also an accessory show and marketing place where I feel in love with the Grind Mansion line of funky feather and chain earrings. I love purchasing products where no two pieces are alike.

I cannot forget about the guys makin’ pies!

The scrumptious desserts were provided by the Larchmont Bungalow!

As you can see this event was jammed packed into about 2.5 hours, but by far the best event LAFW has to offer.

Let’s not forget, nothing is more in fashion than doing good for others.

Maybe they will consider having the event twice of year!
