Not so Rolling Stone

June 30th, 2010 No comments

Rolling Stone held its Rock the Roof event at the Andaz on Sunset, formally known as the Riot Hyatt last Wednesday. Unfortunately, this party was kind of lame…

On paper it sounded great:

Location: Rooftop on the Sunset strip – Awesome!

DJ: Kaskade –Awesome!

Free booze – Awesome!

But for some reason it just didn’t come together.

The party itself was in indoor/outdoor situation. Outside you were on the roof near by the pool with cabanas and view of the strip. On the inside it looked like a rented hall that would host your local church function! No decor, beige carpet and no sense of an actual event. The outside portion was nice but there was a unmanned “step and repeat” set up that seemed a bit out of place.

I love my gray clutch with Union Jack studding.

But I am digging my copy of Kaskade’s Dynasty album that was free in my gift bag - Awesome!

Daring on the Court Fashions!

Tennis season is currently in full swing… Pun intended. Tennis champion Venus Williams has gotten a ton of criticism for a few of her on the court looks.

I played tennis in High School and College, and yes tennis outfits tend to lean towards the overly preppy or frumpy. So I can understand the Williams’ sisters desire to mix it up and show their personal style on the court. Recently Venus’ French Open outfits have raised some eyebrows, “It’s really about the illusion, like, you can wear lace, but what’s the point of wearing lace when there’s just black under? The illusion of just having bare skin is definitely, for me, a lot more beautiful” said Venus.

This criticism made me play a bit a devils advocate. Yes sports and games such as tennis and golf, tend to be more conservative and uniform, but haven’t we seen evolution of uniforms in all sports? Granted I probably would have opted for black shorts in the lacy number pictured below, but by all means she is sexy and modernizing a traditional uniform as she has done over and over again in the past.

Well, if you are not ready to take lace on the court just yet, I found a few more fashion forward looks for you to play with.

Nylon Music Issue Party

June 28th, 2010 No comments

Lots of events last week…

Last Tuesday was the Nylon Music Issue release party featuring a appearance by M.I.A and a performance by Semi Precious Weapons!

nylon mRachel Roy shorts, Michael Stars tunic, 704B pumps.

Nylon M2Rachel Roy sequin bag,  H. Studio cuff  and H&M belt.

The party was the normal Nylon crowd, party goers attempting to out unique each other with their sartorial choices and industry people looking to have a cocktail and network.

This party featured a performance by Semi Precious Weapons, a group that before that night I had never heard of them… and now I will not forget them!

Semi Precious Weapons

Very punk,  eccentric and androgynous… I wasn’t exactly attracted to their music.. Lots of screaming and noise… But, because of their stage presence and stripteases performance I couldn’t take my eyes off them.

Notice the fishnets… Love!

They are currently on tour with Lady Gaga…

Dramatic Tribal Prints

June 25th, 2010 1 comment

Many of our favorite designs did not begin with a sketch book and pen, but many times it is the actual fabric or embellishment that inspires designers to build and create from it.

This Spring/Summer 2010 – tribal prints are big, just in the pasts few weeks I’ve posted several spreads and products featuring tribal prints.  Textile company Vlisco latest collection and campaign ‘Sparkling Grace: Shine like a Star’ offers vibrant and dramatic fabrics with floral designs and influence from traditional African prints.

“Since 1846, Vlisco has been a designer and manufacturer of fashion fabrics that convey West and Central African culture. Its philosophy includes a commitment to empower African women throughout both the design and entire company.”

What I dig about their campaigns, is that instead of showing just showing buyers and designers fabrications in swatches and rolls – they’ve taken inspiration and built dramatic clothing that makes you ask – Where can I get that?

Wedding Season

June 23rd, 2010 No comments

Wedding season is in full swing. I haven’t had too many of my friends take the plunge… But on occasion I am able to make someone’s plus one list and indulge in cake and wine!

WeddingFrench Connection tube dress, personal vintage jacquard jacket, River Island shoes and Junior Drake clutch.

I’ve started calling items I’ve had for 4+ years personal vintage.  This jacket is one of those pieces,  every season I clean out my closet and it would make the cut to hang for at least another season. I picked up the jacket at Nordstrom in the B.P. department about 5 years ago. I wore it a lot then, but in recent years it hasn’t seen much wear.

This jacket is perfectly paired with the pale pink dress, which picks up off the pink flowers in jacket.
